Tenant Right Workshop

On Nov 19, PharGS arranged a workshop on tenant rights and resources presented by the Tenant Rersource and Advisory Centre.

TRAC was kind enough to give us the slides from their presentation, which can be found in following link:

Presentation Slides

There is a ton of information on the TRAC website ( http://tenants.bc.ca/ ), including info on starting and ending a tenancy agreement, template letters for almost any situation, and online courses to teach you about renting and your rights. You can also visit https://www.clicklaw.bc.ca/organization/solveproblems/1021 to get certain documents in other languages.

TRAC also provides a Tenant Survival Guide, which can be found at http://wiki.clicklaw.bc.ca/index.php/Tenant_Survival_Guide

You can call TRAC to get advice and answers to questions at 604-255-0546 or 1-800-665-1185 (hours can be found on their website). They are super friendly and helpful.

PharGS Bowling Night

PharGS got down with its wholesome side at the bowling alley Friday night. Even having to bus all the way to commercial couldn't keep us away, and we'll definitely be back. Our all-star members blew us away with strikes and skills, as well as aggressive gutter balls. Best group date ever!

Richmond Night Market

PharGS members had a blast at the tropical dinosaur themed Night Market. Fried squid, bubble tea, and fish balls soothed cravings and tested palates. It was the perfect carnival for grad students: a crazy menagerie of food and friends.

Welcome BBQ

This year PharGS did something a little bit different. Rather than taking the incoming students out to dinner and leaving the old students to fend for themselves, we hosted a giant barbecue to provide food for each and every graduate student! Although we did experience a light torrential downpour, preventing the incoming students from embarking on the usual Pharmazing Race (lite), we were able to all spend more time together and start to form friendships. We had a great evening getting to know the new students. Welcome!

PharGS Beach Day !!!!

Sunny skies and warm water made a perfect setting for the PharGS beach day. Our barbecuing goals were reached, and Hayley showed off her grillmaster skills. Most people brought something to share, and so there was an abundance of food and drinks. 10/10 would do again, and no one even got a bad sunburn!

Trivia Night

PharGS would like to sincerely thank everyone who came out to make our annual Faculty-wide Trivia Night such a huge success! This year attracted our largest crowd of over sixty attendees, including graduate students, visiting summer students, friends of the Faculty, and staff. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun!

The winning team this year is "Uncomfortably Moist" which comprised Jason, Emma, Karlee, Ben, Rich, Kate, Jen, Andrew and the support of the bartenders Alex and Louis. This team will be engraved on the new Annual Trivia Night plaque!  We look forward to this event again next year!

June Monthly Celebration!

June 22, 2018

June was a month to celebrate! Not only for the start of summer, but our new friends being accepted into medical school, for birthdays, for papers being published, and for presentations at conferences!

To celebrate these accolades, PharGS brought everyone together for an afternoon of snacks, drinks, and a special appearance from a guest magician! We're grateful for Matthew Cheung for coming and impressing us with his bewildering magic tricks . Who says science and magic don't go together?

GSS Summer Soccer League -- Team Morphine

Team Morphine has been enjoying an excellent season! This year we have a full team roster, and the games have been really exciting. Although we've lost a few matches the recreational league has been a great opportunity to get out from the lab and into the sun (and rain!). Thank you to all of the fans who have come out to cheer us on, we look forward to the rest of the season!

PharGS VanDusen Garden Excursion

PharGS Hiked the Chief!

June 16, 2018

A group of intrepid PharGS hiking enthusiasts took on the second peak of the Stawamus Chief on June16th. All 18 people in the group made to the top, which must be some kind of group hike record. Even the chains at the top couldn't keep us down, and the beautiful views made all the struggle worth it.

PharGS Monthly Celebration

On Monday, May 25th, PharGS held our very first Monthly Celebration where we enjoyed coffee, donuts, and each other's company. The purpose of these gatherings is to celebrate and support the accomplishments and milestones (both professional and personal) of our friends and peers.

We celebrated many students who graduated, who received prestigious scholarships and awards, who attended conferences and published papers, who met milestones in their graduate program, and who celebrated birthdays. Congratulations everybody!

Snack Initiative

May 2018 marked the launch of the Snack Initiative as PharGS continues to strengthen the sense of community amongst Graduate students. Understanding the struggles that Grad students face to stay healthy and fed without breaking the bank, PharGS sought to provide convenient options, at a low cost. Keeping in mind that even walking to the nearest deli would be expensive, distracting, and time consuming, this not-for-profit initiative offers a solution by supplying the Grad Lounge with snacks.

PharGS executive members Sumreen and Ariana are currently managing the trial period, and are looking forward to hear feedback from other Graduate students. They are also looking to expand healthier snack options for the well being of the graduate students.

Field Trip to STEMCELL Technologies

A group of approximately twelve students from the Faculty were invited to attend an informational presentation and tour of STEMCELL Technologies, Vancouver's largest and fastest growing biotechnology company. They focus on developing cell culture media and other cell biology research tools. During this meeting, students learned a little bit about the history of the company and received job talks from those in positions of Sales Administration, Senior Science, and Product Manufacturing.

After a tour of the building, students engaged in an intimate networking luncheon and had the opportunity to inquire about personal career paths and receive job-hunting advice. We learned that STEMCELL is always hiring and might be a great place for a fresh graduate to apply. Thanks for having us STEMCELL!

Cinco de Mayo Celebration!

The 2018 Annual PharGS Cinco de Mayo celebration was a success! We enjoyed awesome tacos, a piñata, and fun board games. While Hayley and Shireen's culinary skills were top notch, it was Tanya Saxena's victory over the piñata that made the event extra special. We hope this tradition continues for many years to come!

Delta Community Animal Shelter (DCAS) Donation Drive

We are running a second donation drive to Delta Community Animal Shelter in this breeding season when the animals especially need support. We started the drive last summer, since it was a rough time for shelter animals due to the BC wild fires. We collected a significant number of pet food and toys, clean towels, animal cages, and monetary donations, all of which were used for medical and behavioral support for homeless animals and were greatly appreciated by the Animal Shelter. After communicating with the staff this year, we have understood that the animals are the most in need of these items:

As always, we are grateful for your care and support. For details, please refer to the poster or contact phargsubc@gmail.com.

Thanks for your participation and we wish you all the best,

Art and Science of Marketing

Ms. Andrea Tegzes, Associate Director of Marketing at STEMCELL Technologies covered art and science of strategically marketing science. Using marketing best practices, we can leverage human heuristics to nudge our audiences to become more open to hearing a "new" point of view. It was wonderful to see over 15 graduate students and post-graduate doctoral fellows.

Thanks to the luck of the Irish, the PharGS St. Patrick's day party was a success! Some came by for a snack and a chat, others stayed for board games and to test out the new Nintendo SNES Mini. It was great to see so many PharGS faces - over twenty, in fact!
