Holiday Party
To celebrate making it through another crazy year, PharGS hosted the Holiday Party as the final event of 2021!
This event saw the best turnout of the year, with many grad students coming out to enjoy food, drinks (big thanks to Riley for mixing margaritas all night!), and good company before the holiday break. We got in the festive spirit with a gingerbread train decorating contest where Lukas’ team emerged as the triumphant winners, but all teams were rewarded with some incredible prizes.
Several grad students also participated in the White Elephant gift exchange, where a waffle maker was one of the most sought-after prizes of the night. The night continued with some music, dancing, games, and socializing.
Thank you SO MUCH to everyone that came out, not only to the event, but all of our events this year. It has been tons of fun organizing events to bring our graduate student community together. We're looking forward to handing over the role to Leah and Megan next year!

"Cambie" Night
Although not quite the same, a PharGS tradition was back with our “Cambie” Night event on November 19th! Tons of graduate students showed up to eat, drink, and socialize at our second last event of the year.
Unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions we were not actually able to head to Cambie Street, but we had just as much fun in the PharmSci grad lounge! We started the night off with some delicious sandwiches and Riley’s famous margaritas while catching up with fellow grad students.
As the night progressed many different games were played – Beerio Kart, flip cup, sociables, foosball and more (I heard that Marta may have beat Mike R in foosball 10-1? But Louis remains the undefeated PharGS champion!).
Thanks so much to everyone who came out to make this event so much fun, we hope to see you at the Holiday Party in a couple weeks!

Halloween Party
There was an awesome turnout for the spook-tacular celebrations at our PharGS Halloween Party on October 29.
PharGS members brough out their very best costumes and pumpkin carving skills and met in the grad lounge for some Halloween festivities. We enjoyed some pizza and drinks while catching up with new and old friends. There were some spooky costumes, some clever costumes, and some hilarious costumes in the Costume Contest. Some gourd-geous jack-o-laterns created for our Pumpkin Carving Contest as well!
A huge congratulations to all the winners from those contests, and a major thank you to everyone who joined the event and helped make it such a blast! Look out for our next event coming up in November. We hope to see you there!

Halloween Movie
It’s spooky season, and PharGS is getting in the spirit by watching a Halloween movie on the big screen in one of the PharmSci lecture halls!
We had some pizza and drinks in the grad lounge before heading down to the big lecture hall on the first floor of our building. Our grad students had a chance to vote on the movie we played, and the classic “Nightmare Before Christmas” came out on top!
It was a great way to get into the spooky spirit to get ready for Halloween.

Photo Scavenger Hunt
Campus is finally buzzing with life again, and it has been so exciting to be able to welcome everyone back to the building!
To help people get to know UBC’s (giant) campus, PharGS set up a Photo Scavenger Hunt where PharGS members had to identify photos from different places all over campus. We encouraged students to get outside and enjoy the sunshine while exploring the campus for themselves.
There was a great turnout of submissions, and we got some great selfies taken from a few different locations across campus.

Welcome BBQ
There was a great turnout of both new and returning students at the PharGS New Student Welcome BBQ on September 10!
PharGS members were able to enjoy some delicious BBQ, along with some snacks and drinks while meeting new people and catching up with old friends. People also got to show off their skills in games like ladder golf, ring toss, and ping pong!
A huge thank you to Riley and Mike for being grill masters for the evening and making sure our burgers and hotdogs were cooked to perfection.
Thanks to everyone who joined us for the BBQ, we hope all the new students felt welcome and had a chance to meet other grad students in our faculty.

Pubmeds - GSS Softball Semi-Finals
Playoff action from GSS softball saw the Pharm Sci Pubmeds in action against Physics at UNA field in Wesbrook Village. The late night match up was hampered by darkness from the outset as both teams scrambled to get in the game before nightfall.
Physics jumped out to a quick 3 run lead in the top of the first, which also saw a collision between physics baserunner and the Pubmeds shortstop, which resulted in the rarely seen "do over" of an at bat.
In the bottom of the first Pharm Sci answered with timely hits from Rae and Lenny, who were cashed in by a home run by Brent. Then again timely good at bats from Yao, Rosanne and Danielle, set up a 2-run home run from Brandon to reach the 5 run mercy rule.
In the top of the third inning with runners on first and third and 2 out, a ground ball up the middle from physics looked like it might score a run and extend the inning. But a diving grab and roll to touch 2nd base for the force out ended the inning and preserved the 2 run lead for the pubmeds going into what looked like the 4th and final inning.
As the moon rose above the trees, the stage was set for an exciting final inning as darkness fell over UNA field. The relentless offense of Physics was too much for the Pubmeds in the top of the 4th, which saw the 5 run mercy rule enforced and Physics to an 8 to 5 lead, but with the big bats due up for Pharm Sci. After Lenny scorched a double into the deepest part of the park, Brent smashed a no doubter over the fence in right field to bring Pharm Sci within 1 run. Solid singles by Yao and Danielle, put the winning run on first base, with no outs and Brandon, the slugger, at the dish. With one swing of the bat, Brandon smoked a line drive that looked like it would leave the park and end the game, but CLANG... it rang out loudly as it bounced off the very top of the outfield fence and back into play. Running fast, Yao scored from second base to tie the game... Danielle, determined to score from first base, bolted around the base path, rounding third as the throw came in from the outfield. However the throw pulled the catcher off the plate, allowing the unstoppable D-train to score the go-ahead run to win the game! Final score 9-8.
Big thanks to the official Pharm Sci Softball cheering section, featuring Linda, Ben, Carolyn, Chris, Cailyn and others. As well as team captain Adenike for keeping score and ensuring team success.
With the win, the Pubmeds advance to the semifinals which will be held next Wednesday at UNA field evening. Come on out and cheer us on as we look to defeat the Chemistry Beerettes and advance to the finals!

Pizza & Paint Night
What's a better way to unwind than spending an evening painting, eating pizza, and hanging out with your peers??
So for this event, the Health and Wellness subcommittee joined forces with our Socials and organized a relaxing evening for our PharGS members!
Even though the weather was not as collaborative and we had to move the event inside, the evening was a success and everyone had fun.
Special thanks to lovely Artemis who walked us through the painting process and taught us all the tips and tricks needed!
It was beautiful to see everyone bringing out their own creativity and give their very own spin to the paint.

Tie Dye & Community Celebrations
There were many achievements to celebrate from our amazing grad students at the Community Celebration on July 23rd!
This Community Celebration was followed by a Tie Dye event. PharGS supplied a plain white t shirt to each grad student, and everyone let their creativity run wild with different patterns and colour schemes! Everyone’s shirts turned out unique and looked great. PharGS members also enjoyed some snacks and had a chance to just hangout and enjoy the beautiful sunshine!
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Community Celebration and Tie Dye, it was tons of fun!
We hope to see everyone at our PharGS Hike coming up in early August 😊

Beach BBQ
We had a great turnout for the PharGS Beach BBQ that happened at Jericho Beach on July 9th!
It was a beautiful evening with lots of sunshine, smiles and many PharGS members joined us for some delicious burgers, cold drinks, and fun games.
Big thanks to Riley and Mike R. for taking on the role of grill masters for the evening!
It was great to finally see some faces in person and catch up after a long year of virtual get-togethers.
Thank you so much to everyone who attended the event, it was a blast!

Beach Bubbles
We were SO excited to finally host our first physically-distanced in person event of the year last weekend with PharGS Beach Bubbles!
PharGS members gathered in accordance with the health orders in BC’s Restart Plan and were able to play some games, enjoy some snacks and drinks, and catch up in person after a long year of virtual events!
The weather cooperated and it was a beautiful sunny evening at Jericho Park Rugby Field, where we had the whole field to ourselves. There were some exciting bocci ball games, frisbee, soccer, and some people just hung out in the sun!

Photo Contest
With weather starting to get better, PharGS members were encouraged to head outside and take some sweet nature pictures for the PharGS Photo Contest that was held in May!
Many PharGS members submitted photos and we had around 35 total submissions which was great to see. PharGS members then voted for their favourite photos, and winners were announced in early June.
Congrats to Lenny, Juliana, Marta, Jiamin, and Mike for winning prizes!

Virtual Bake Night
To kick off the May long weekend PharGS held the first event organized by our new Health and Wellness subcommittee.
We virtually met on Zoom to hang out together while baking and decorating some cookies!
We let our creativity wander and we ended up by having so many great cookies – from scientific dose-responses curves to towers and minions.
Shout out to Yao for making his own dough and being unanimously crowned the star baker of the evening!

Virtual Gameshow Night
To end off the month of April with a bang, PharGS combined the Monthly Celebration and Virtual Gameshow Night into one awesome event!
Sumreen announced some amazing achievements from several PharGS members to start off the evening, and then we played our own version of The Price is Right!
PharGS members teamed up in pairs and deliberated in breakout rooms to try and guess the correct price of several items, from bed frames to centrifuges to ostrich eggs! It was lots of fun to see everyone’s guesses, and the top four teams won some sweet prizes.

Virtual Music Bingo
Lots of fun was had during PharGS Virtual Music Bingo, which was our first event for April!
Several PharGS members met on Zoom for a night of good tunes and prizes. Short clips of different songs were played, and people had to recognize the name and artist of the song to mark in off on their electronic bingo sheet.
We ended up playing five rounds, with different types of music in each round: 1980’s, 2000’s, 2010’s, Guitar Hero 3 Reloaded Directors Cut, and a mega round with a mash up of all the songs from previous rounds!

Virtual Trivia Night
March started with some friendly competition in PharGS Virtual Trivia Night!
Many PharGS members met over Zoom and were divided into teams, where their knowledge was tested in five different categories.
Team D ended the night as champions, although it was a very tight competition!
It was a fun night of trivia and fun facts, and nice to see everyone (even if it was just through a screen).

Virtual Games Night
To kick off the start of 2021, PharGS hosted a Virtual Games Night!
This was a fun-filled night where we met on Zoom to hangout and play some interactive games online. Some people showed off their beautiful drawing skills in Telestrations (see the pictures for the results!) or Pictionary, and some spent the evening trying to find the imposter while playing Among Us.
Thanks so much to everyone that joined our event, we’re happy to be able to stay connected even when the pandemic prevents us from seeing each other in person.
