Grandview Lanes Bowling

Another great night of PharGS bowling, and the pins didn't stand a chance! Aces in our grad student society unveiled their hidden talents, as balls were rolling, spinning, curving and bouncing fast and furiously.

It got fast, maybe too fast, as the game transitioned from regular 10-pin play to a notorious 'speed bowling' which heated up tempers and the alley likewise. The only thing more bumpin' than the pins was the afterparty! All in all, a night to remember!

Halloween Party

Halloween may have been the best attended PharGS event of 2019! Thank you to everybody who got dressed up, brought something to share and made the night amazing! Congratulations to Adria, Sonia, & Jen for winning the baking, Fall photo and costume contest, respectively.

It was a great, late night of celebration and we're already looking forward to next year!  Thank you to our resident Halloween Queen, Shireen Anbardan (VP Finance) for organizing!

CAMBIE NIGHT

PharGS took on the annual tradition of heading to the Cambie Bar for a night of festivities! The night started off at Lukas and Griffins house with some good times and fun games. The group then transitioned to the Cambie where, after a long wait, some students were able to make it inside. However, in solidarity with those still in line, the Cambie group left the bar to meet up with the rest of the students who had relocated to the Bourbon room. Once the group was happily reunited, a night full of dancing and good times followed. After all the Cambie isn’t even closing after all so it was an easy decision! Special shout out to Yao for some awesome break dancing.

BOARD GAME NIGHT

September was flying by and we thought it would be great to relax and spend a laid back afternoon playing board games! This event was so hoppin' that no photos were captured, and it will live on only in the memories of those lucky enough to have attended this historic evening in person.

Cheers to the mystery.

KARAOKE NIGHT

PharGS went to Richmond for a Karaoke party to sing (and scream) the night away- and so we did. Hidden in a mall in Richmond, K-Fever was the place where we unleashed our musical talents. From rock classics like Linkin Park and Evanescence's "Bring me back to life" (ABSOLUTE crowd favourite) to pop legends like Britney Spears, Beyoncé, and The Backstreet Boys, and even some catchy   J-Pop, we covered them all! A few rockstars and vocal wonders revealed themselves that night and fired up the cheering crowd. Thanks again to all who joined last week, we hope to bring back the beat soon!

VANCOUVER PRIDE PARADE

PharGS took a trip downtown this August long weekend to celebrate with  the Vancouver Pride Parade! It was quite the spectacle on a beautiful sunny day with hundreds of organizations taking part in the festivities! Lots of laughs and some free items were given out! Thanks to PhasedIN for the financial support in buying PharGS some snacks and drinks to keep us hydrated and energized through all the dancing in the sun! We certainly can’t wait till the 2020 parade :)

SUMMER PAINT NIGHT

PharGS' third paint night was a massive success, with another huge turnout. We painted a pretty beach scene with guidance from Artemis (insta: @artbyartemis) and by the end of the night everybody had produced a beautiful, original version! Thank you for coming out, and getting creative!

Bowen Island Hike

PharGS took to the sea to travel to Bowen island in hopes of summiting mount Gardener trail. The 9.8KM hike offered beautiful views at the 700M north summit which overlooked the sunshine coast. It was a great day filled with laughs and some losing ourselves in nature (both literally and figuratively). Shout out to Lennart for taking over as interim social director and mountain explorer. Until the next hike!

TRIViA NIGHT

PharGS Trivia Night took place in the atrium. This event is held every year and hosted by the Quiz Mistress. Seven teams battled it out for 3 rounds of trivia, but in the end Tedothy's Angels + Not Scott (Ariana, Ted, Shireen, Hayley, Nevena, and Brandon) took the win! Our very own bartenders Louis and Alex served the classic trivia night mojitos all night.

See you at next years Trivia Night!

DRUGGERS & SLUGGERS

Season Update!

On Wednesday night, the PharGS Softball team was embattled in an intense match against Psychology. In the top of the first inning, PharGS jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on two solo home runs by bash brothers Lukas and Griffin. In the bottom of the first, the bats came alive for the Psych squad as they erupted for a 7 run mercy inning. PharGS answered back in the third inning with 4 big runs!  Psych and PharGS exchanged single run innings moving late in the game as the sunlight began to fade and defensive prowess was on display. Diving catches and double plays by Psych’s 2nd basemen a 32 year GSS softball league veteran, were not to be outdone by an impressive double play from PharGS third basemen Kate.  The infielding was immaculate for PharGS, with shortstop Looooouis and 2nd basemen Ariana making several put-outs, Roland played solid at first base and Sam and Captain Nevena were working hard behind the dish!  Nothing was dropping into the outfield either due to the stellar efforts of Yao, Griffin, Lukas and Jasmin.  With bases loaded in the 6th, PharGS lead off batter Sam was robbed of a hit as Psych made the questionable call to invoke the ‘not past the pitcher’ foul ball rule, on a ball that was played well-beyond the pitchers mound, resulting in a ‘do-over’ which ended the inning. Down two runs in the final inning, top of the 7th, the brothers bash (Lukas and Griffin) again pulled the team back tied with two solo home runs! It was not to be for PharGS however, 3 consecutive hits by the Psych sluggers ended the game with a walk-off single that scored the final run. Final score 11-10.  Amateur video caught footage of Griffin’s 7 inning solo homer.

SUMMER BBQ

What better way to celebrate all of your achievements and the

end of term than with a BBQ! Thanks to everyone who showed

up and brought some good vibes along, we definitely all had a

blast that day. A good looking crowd, frisbee acrobats and two

mad talented BBQ chefs provided a blank canvas for our photo

crew Marta and Louis.

Spring Egg Hunt

The first PharGS Egg hunt is in the books and was a success!

Thanks to everyone who came out and went on a mystical quest

for the treats hidden around our faculty. We certainly enjoyed

setting up this scavenge hunt, but even more so seeing some

happy faces after successfully returning with bags full of sweets!

After the hunt owe got creative with egg decorating, in which

Egglisabeth Taylor and Ben Eggington were born.

March 28 2019

Monthly Celebration

March was full of struggles, but also full of victories. A committee of devoted and determined grad students put together an exceptional professional development event, CPiPS 2019. It brought students together with professionals from government, industry, and academia under the theme of "The Future of Pharmaceutical Sciences: Research, Development, and Policy." Another big event this month was the Pharmaceutical Sciences 3 Minute Thesis Heat. Griffin and Ross took first and second place, and advanced to the next round of competition. On a sad note, we had to say goodbye to Debbie, who was always a bright spot in the faculty.

St. Patrick's Day Celebration

Is there anything better than Sushi at St. Patty's day? I don't think so, even though not all of our Irish friends might fully agree.

St. Patrick's Day 2019 is in the books and we had a great time in the grad lounge with snacks, drinks, and games. Looking forward to more events like this!

Summarize Your Research Workshop

Summarize your Research” provided a conceptual framework for graduate students to approach summary in various aspects of their work including: building an ‘elevator pitch’, conferences, and paper writing. Over lunch, participants also had the opportunity to present a preliminary summary of their work to small peer groups. Peers then provided feedback and helped the presenter improve their “pitch”, with each group member rotating through the presentation role. Though some were nervous at first, this became a favourite part of the workshop! Common themes or lessons from each group were then compiled for some great discussion.

Valentine's Day

Thanks again to everyone who took out a few minutes of their day at this busy time of the year, and joined us last week for our little Valentine's day special. We laid down our pipettes, pens, and laptops for a while to get together and share our love over coffee and treats. The highlight of the afternoon was the valentine's card that we collectively personalized with affectionate messages in various languages represented by our grad student community.

Love was in the air!
